I really enjoy the integration of live-action and motion design production. Turns out that my good friend Will Hyde--the ECD over at Superfad and all around super-talented guy with whom I co-directed a music video a while back (not near as supercool as this stuff here...but fun nonetheless)--has really outdone himself in the latest Sony campaign called "Eye Candy". Great little behind-the-scenes piece here showing the amazing work of Will and his Superfad crew on... read more ›

I want my work to be protected and used only when I want and how I want. But I also want it to be consumable in the new media. Confused like the rest of us? If you make art for a living or are interested in the rapidly evolving rights for people who create stuff--and especially if you live in/around NYC--then point yourself at this FREE day-long symposium brought to you by the fine folks... read more ›

I feel compelled to share with you my latest documentary short film in the series I've been commissioned to create for Russell Investments. This particular piece is about planning--a topic that bridges my client to the rest of the world's day to day endeavors--but it might as well be about inspiration. That's the primary reason I want to share it here... Not for the commercial message, but because Helen Thayer is one of... read more ›

Too often advertising is a lot about BIG. Especially automotive advertising. Big budgets, big gear, big egos. Big and boring. This latest Nissan commercial from TWBA Toronto, however, isn't big in those traditional senses. Instead, it's big on spirit, innovation, and effectiveness. Plus big points on photography/cinematography. Seriously great camera work. Enjoy the making of video here above, but be sure to click the 'continue reading' link below and enjoy the finished commercial after... read more ›

Remember the campaign I shot for SanDisk down in New Zealand last autumn? T'was the campaign where SanDisk was cool enough to let me blog/tweet/facebook about shooting the ads in real time, which made it the first global campaign of its kind. In part, those ads I shot have been used to promote their Best Photo Sequence contest in partnership with Freeskier and Snowboard Magazine.Plain and simple, the best skiing and the best snowboard photo... read more ›

There was a time when good advertising photos and commercials stood out because they were creative. When just having a picture in your ad could set you a part. But those times are long gone. In today's crowded, noisy world good advertising photography and video must transcend just 'creative'. Arguably, everything that is made is creative. But if you flip through any magazine or browse any interesting site, there are images that engage you and... read more ›

Ok, I promised a follow up to Friday's funny video post about making sausage. If you missed it, my point was largely that shooting ads and making commercials is much like making sausage--you love the taste of it, but you'd probably risk losing your appetite if you watched it being made. That last part of that statement is of course tongue-in-cheek, since learning more about how we make this sort of stuff--as it relates to... read more ›
