Why do artists loathe business? Why does business fear art? Each side holding the other back for no good reason. Conventional thinking declares that real art is “pure” and free of commercial motivations - that business corrupts art. Conversely, business minds often seem to fear art because it’s perceived lack of a road map for mathematical “ROI.” Total bs. The next time someone suggests that business has no... read more ›

Some Friday fun to inspire your weekend: Reinvent the mundane. Im always impressed with how street artists can transform mundane objects into a fertile canvas. Visually rearranging everyday spaces that seem to serve a single function (like a crosswalk or drain), and remixing with an ingenuity that knocks function on its ass. This reinvention of a seemingly innocuous wall, either in a highly economical manner or with painstaking precision and effort, tilts our perspective. Surprise... read more ›

I like this Jim Marshall quote: “I worked hard but I never really considered it work. I always enjoyed myself and only took an assignment if I had complete control and access. My reputation was such that managers didn’t f*ck with me. I had the trust of the artist. I would work with them and they knew I wouldn’t f*ck around or do anything they didn’t like.” What... read more ›

Do you talk politics at your table? Left or right, red or blue, conservative or progressive - it is that time again. The Presidential election is upon us. For the next five months, leading up to November 6, 2012, political imagery will capture the attention of America and beyond. The photography will be ubiquitous. And the films, ads, and speeches, will flood our airwaves, tvs and tablets. The pundits will express their impassioned points of... read more ›

Shepard Fairey has a new installation in London's Pleasure Gardens. The 10-story mural is part of the London Pleasure Garden's vision of emulating the 17th and 19th Century tradition of 'communal spaces where people from all walks of life converged to listen to music, admire paintings, stroll, drink, flirt and immerse themselves in the culture.' As the world's attention turns to London for the 2012 Olympic Games (July 27-Aug 12) the longtime cultural capital of... read more ›

I’ve said it before, but it would be remiss not to mention it again: Back up your data. Sad reminder of this again when I saw a recent story on PetaPixel about a guy who is taking Apple to court over lost baby photos, saying the failure of a storage device caused him to lose priceless memories. Perminder Tung used an Apple Time Capsule... read more ›

Here are some behind-the-scenes snapshots of my time here in Brazil with Mike Horn. Although we are almost done here, our collaboration with Mike and the Pangaea is just beginning. Much much more to come. Pay attention for our next trip to South Africa in a few weeks. Click through some of the above photos to see what we’ve been up to.

It has been just over one year since my last encounter with the Pangaea. I met Mike Horn and his crew onboard the Pangaea in Seattle last summer shortly after our adventure in the South China Sea together (the chronicles of that trip are here and here). Now, by example of what can be accomplished in a year, consider for a moment... read more ›

Facebook dropped a photo app today that will definitely turn a few heads. The app is chock-full of the features iPhone photographers want: You can crop, rotate and add filters to any picture in your camera roll in app. If your Facebook use is all about photos this app could replace the regular Facebook app. It offers a “news feed” that exclusively shows pictures as its home page. Screen shots below. What do you guys... read more ›

Every so often, I discover or am reminded of tectonic shifts in photography that seem to be little-known by the exploding world of photographers. No harm, no foul; but in those cases, I feel feel a social + moral desire (obligation?) to occasionally point to these shifts. One such case is New York's Photo... read more ›
