Amanda Crew is an actress who’s best known for playing Monica on the hit HBO show “Silicon Valley,” which I absolutely love for skewering tech culture in a loving but deadly accurate way. If you haven’t seen the show please, please do yourself a favor and check it out - season 4 recently premiered on HBO. But her career goes back many years: she’s appeared in a ton of shows and movies like Smallville, Final Destination 3, Life As We Know It and much more. We touch on a bunch of stuff here that I wasn’t expecting to get into...

Debbie Millman is currently the Editorial and Creative Director of Print Magazine, but she has an insane track record going back decades: she’s the author of 6 books including “How To Think Like A Great Graphic Designer,” a prolific design writer in outlets like NYT, Fast Company, and Design Observer, chairs the Masters In Branding program at SVA (co-founded with Steven Heller), and hosts a long running podcast called “design matters” which has done 265 episodes over 10 years with legends and icons like Michael Beirut, Stephen Heller, Chip Kidd, Massimo Vignelli, Isaac Mizrahi and Malcolm Gladwell. And that’s just...

Turn back your mental clock to April of 2012, when Facebook acquired Instagram for the eye-popping price of $1 billion. It was a big story, with headlines all over not just the tech press but mainstream outlets like CNN, Newsweek and the nightly news-- who could have imagined a company with barely over a dozen employees commanding a 10-figure valuation?! Like most of you, I watched the story unfold like some kind of tech fairy tale, amazed at what the crew at IG had accomplished so quickly. But my amazement was tempered with shame and regret, because in a not-so-different...

So grateful for all the feedback on the last #cjRAW. Went vlog style for the Stolen Golf Cart + Other Life Lessons vid and got great feedback (with, of course, one hater ;) As such - given the fun I had making the last one, the success of that approach, plus some free time early in this new year and I thought I'd follow up that with another vlog episode here... I was crushed when I heard about the Paris attacks. My heart and mind go out for everyone affected. Ugh. For those who've been following awhile, you may know that I lived and worked in Paris for a few years. It's a place I'm still deeply connected with ... close friends, regular vacations and visits, deep memories, and a place whose community we will always belong. When tragedies like these happen, there is the horror. But we also find moments of reflection, of empathy, and gratitude for what we DO have, even amidst the loss. In particular these kind of...

If you’ve been following me for awhile, you'll certainly be familiar with a series by the same damn name I started doing way back in 2007 which was a behind the scenes look at commercial photography. Well....

One of the most common misconceptions I come across is the belief that once you’ve somehow “made it," I / one / you don’t hit ruts, bumps, run into blocks, or otherwise get paralyzed by the creative work that needs doing. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. I get thrown for a loop all the time. I’ve found myself off my game at numerous times in my career, getting lost for a bit and struggling to re-capture the clarity that comes with great creative vision, intent, and very hard work. And the same is true of so...

Do you struggle with self-doubt and shame when it comes to sharing your creative work? In this episode, we explore how to cultivate a sharing mindset. Even if we are proud of what we’ve made, we still often feel an overpowering desire to hide. We might drop our work limply onto the floor and slink away, instead of holding it up for everyone to see. If self-doubt and fear of not being good enough have been holding you back, this one is for you. Enjoy! Listen to the Podcast Subscribe
