Wanted to take a break for a hot second this morning -- away from studios and airplanes and shooting photos in far away places -- to make a special announcement and say a huge, ginormous thank you. If you’ve been a part of this community for some time, then you already know that a few years back, myself and my good pal Craig Swanson, scratched out some ideas on a whiteboard, rallied a bunch of friends, and kicked off a dream to unleash the creative...

There is a school of thought that proposes the Earth is home to a smattering of "sacred sites" -- energy centers, places of mystery and wonder -- earth Chakras some call them. The Pyramids. Lake Titicaca. Mt. Fuji. You get it. I don't know if Paris is on that list, but it should be. There's a magic to that city, so much so that I lived there for a few years not all that long ago and get back there on the regular a couple times each year. So it was with serious interest that I ravaged through these extremely...

While the New Year stands for new beginnings, resolutions, and clean slates, it's also a chance to look back at 2012... a fascinating year. From the eyepopping athleticism of the Summer Olympics in London and the drama of the U.S. Presidential Election to the devastation of Hurricane Sandy and the wildfires that ravaged Colorado, there was no lack of engaging photography in 2012. I browsed some of the collective "best of" 2012 and created the roundup below. Human exaltation, powerful and heartbreaking photojournalism and awe-inspiring sports + nature photography. These...

For my USA friends, tomorrow is our Thanksgiving holiday where we traditionally give thanks for all that we have in life: friends, family, individuality - whatever it might be to his or her own... And I love to invite our international friends to join us in this celebration. While I normally invoke a more serious tone for this holiday - one filled with true, humble, gratitude - today is all that, but I couldn't help thanking you in another way... by including 5 completely radical, bizarre (creative?) recipes for the traditional turkey radness... So join me in being grateful for...

If you come around these parts often you know that I have a keen interest in education. The fact is, in order to find success in a creative career or otherwise, learning what's most important and executing against it is critical. In short, if you want to kick-ass at your job, hobby, passion, life... you need to learn how to learn (see my homie Tim Ferriss' creativeLIVE course from last week. Tim took us on whirlwind tour of some of the key concepts in his new book The 4-Hour Chef which...

With the utmost respect and humility I wanted to share this collection of images of the devastation wreaked upon the East Coast by Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy. "Clobbered" was the headline in this morning Seattle Times, referring to Sandy, the "Super Storm," that's pounding the northeast. I just saw images and read a figure that there may well be 20-90 billion in damages as well as continued loss of life. What a crusher. Wanted everyone who is affected over there - including your families and friends - to know that our hearts and thoughts...

You have certainly heard this from me before, but the more I think about it, study it, and live it, the more I can say definitively that the photographic snapshot has quietly emerged as one of our culture's--if not the world's--most unsung creative heroes. (Here's some deeper explanation.) This little film is an exploration and summary of some thoughts and personal experiences, having just recently carved out a month to live with the snapshot top of mind via the Dasein: Invitation to Hang installation during my month-long artist in residency at the Ace Hotel NYC. While this story...

FINAL UPDATE: Thank you, thank you, thank you! Together we raised $5000 -- enough to build a fresh water well that will serve 250 families forever--and we did it in under 18 hours. Who makes this possible? YOU and http://www.charitywater.org. Please check them out and continue to give. Consider asking your friends and family to re-direct what they'd normally spend on your birthday this year and send it to charity: water. 100% (yes you read correctly) of your money goes directly to water projects...0% to administration and other peripheries. Again, many thanks! If you want to continue giving on this...

For USA readers, yesterday was Thanksgiving - I spent the day with family, being thankful for so much. For the international readers, I hope you joined in yesterday, or perhaps will join me in some thankfulness today. Front and center on my list of things to be thankful for are: health, family, and community. Health makes the whole thing possible; family--immediate and extended--gives me the daily dose of what love really means, as well as the strength to live a full life; and community--my friends, my amazing staff, co-collaborators, and you--make it all so exciting, rich, and inspirational beyond my...

I'm excited and proud to officially announce today the launch of Seattle 100: Portrait of a City. This project--a photo, video, and ethnographic study--is the culmination of a 3-year long labor of love where I've identified more than 100 people who are driving culture in/around Seattle. If you've been following along here for the past few weeks, you've seen me writing and vlogging about it. Well, now it's finally here. And like many of my projects, this is more of an ecosystem, comprised of several components...in this case a book, a gallery show, a website, and a live...
