Everyone wants a mentor, the wise little green creature who will teach us how to swing a lightsaber and use the Force. I was no exception when I started out in photography. I thought someone was going to take my outstretched hand and guide me along the path to greatness. They’d tell me what to learn, how to learn it, and what to do once I’d done so. As I’ve progressed along my creative path... read more ›

Fact: creativity is a team sport. Yes, the actual act of making the work is sometimes a solo activity (drawing, writing, editing a film, etc) but the real driving force behind every creative pro is their community: their clients, collaborators, peers and the rest of the humans in the complex web of symbiotic relationships that give us inspiration, support and (ultimately) an income. Creativity cannot live in a vacuum. We depend on each other, like... read more ›

Hey friends - Happy Holidays! It's the day after Thanksgiving here in the states, and I'm getting some much needed family & friend time. I was up late last night and I made a video in the dark by myself. Just a little rant I'd like you to watch and consider and share. As we head into the holidays, I'm seeing all the consumerism messages everywhere. Above all, it makes me think about something I... read more ›

Hi Friends. Hopefully you saw my #IceBucketChallenge video and donated or participated in the #ALS internet meme (and were able to keep sight of the real target of raising awareness + $$ for ALS!) To be clear we were just goofing from a production standpoint, but since there was some cinematic playfulness and we used a bit of photo tech for my icy challenge, I got a bunch of questions / comments from readers asking... read more ›

I know, I know! I'm two weeks late for the #ALS #icebucketchallenge...I hate being late for an internet meme, but this is obviously way more/bigger/important than a meme... In this case, as you know by now, the world is raising awareness and money for ALS research. I've donated to ALS for not hitting my 24hr mark... and it's never too late for a good cause, so bring on the ice anyway, per the... read more ›

In case you missed our December 6th episode of Chase Jarvis LIVE, it was all about the portfolio. We had Allegra Wilde, visual strategist and co-founder of eyeist.com on the show, talking about common mis-steps and some of the best ways for your work to get noticed. She even gave us a quick portfolio review and a sneak peek at her upcoming service eyeist.com. You missed quite the show, indeed, but luckily the re-watch of... read more ›

I don't talk about gear all that much, but this one goes out to you camera geeks and gearheads. So many of you have been asking about the array of cameras I'm shooting while living in NYC (and somewhat in line with yesterday's post) we decided to whip up a quick Chase Jarvis TECH video to run you through them. Ten formats in all, from top of the line Nikons, to old Polaroids, even some... read more ›

Thanks to the hundreds of you who wrote in to take a stab at how the ballet image was made [note that this thumbnail here is a crop, not the final...go to the original post to see that one]. A handful of you nailed it to varying degrees. Here's my breakdown of shot: First, this was not a snapshot. Anything I'd list that would be of interest has been planned, choreographed Second, this image was... read more ›

\\\\\ UPDATE the mystery bike match game has been solved. Deb got them all right on this comment. ///// Howdy y’all, Dartanyon here. We normally don't post much on the weekend, but I wanted to take a moment for an off-topic Sunday morning Public Service Announcement. May is bike to work [and school] month. Around the studio we're environmentally conscious, and have turned BTWM into sorta a big deal. We join in on the ride... read more ›
