Standing out in your field - getting noticed - is the hardest thing about making a living or a life around creativity. Just so happens I was in NYC a couple weeks ago and sat down with YouTuber Sara Dietschy to specifically answer this question. I really want you to hear this answer. Check it out and show Sara some support while you’re there ;)

If you love podcasts/shows around business, definitely check these guys: Business & Burgers. I've made every mistake you can make in the photo industry, coming up in a time where few bits of information was freely available on how to pursue a professional career in photography. When I inquired about your most taboo questions you were afraid to ask, I got some great ones. Everything from setting rates, to working with agents, to managing doubts, depression, and creative burn out. If you were unable to watch my talk... read more ›

If you made a list of people you’d think would be into meditation, I'd probably be at the bottom of that list. I grew up as a skate punk and an athlete, competing first for bragging rights at the skatepark and eventually head-to-head on the soccer fields with my college scholarship at stake. Soon thereafter I bailed on med school and dropped out of a PhD in Philosophy, where science and logic ruled the domain.... read more ›

While I’ve been a professional photographer for nearly two decades, my biggest influence isn’t another photographer: it’s the skateboarding, skiing and snowboarding communities I grew up in here in Seattle. Like most of us raised on the West Coast, I tried to spend every second outdoors. Skateboarding, BMX biking, skiing and snowboarding were my lifeblood. Anyone who’s been part of one of these communities knows how strong their pull is: it was cohesive, communal — it felt... read more ›

Recently, the photo team at CreativeLive asked me to weigh in on the new Hasselbad X1D camera. I have shot a lot of in-studio sessions on Hasselblad cameras, and in 2006 I was given the first ever Hasselblad Master award. Hasselblad cameras have always created gorgeous images but the camera body is delicate and bulky -- to the extent that you don’t feel like you can take them anywhere. This camera is for an image maker who really values the... read more ›

After recording an episode of cjLIVE with my pal Lewis Howes, the tables were turned when he took out his own cameras & audio gear to record me for his show, the School of Greatness. If you're a fan of my series #30DaysOfGenius, (www.creativelive.com/genius) I bet you'll love Lewis' podcast as well. Lewis believes greatness is cultivated within. To that end, his show seeks to find what makes others great and delivers insights we can all apply to our own lives.

Sat down with Jay Acunzo to chat about the myth of the muse and one of my favorite topics: creativity. The way we've been trained to think is that creativity is reserved for certain people, it's something you're anointed at birth or by some magic experience in childhood. The truth is, we're all creative. We dive deep into this and I give a little sneak peek to #30DaysOfGenius.

Shutterbug took a little peek behind the scenes of this photo that recently struck a chord on my social channels. It's a good reminder that often it's the moments between the moments where the real magic lies.
