Fashionistas (and fashion photographers) love to play with gender boundaries. Too often IMHO that turns campy, like poorly-executed drag, or tasteless-pushing-offensive. These don’t.

Here’s a Monday morning kick for you – Craig McDean’s images of actress Chloe Sevigny, in character as a pre-op transgender assassin in an upcoming British show). And this, my friends, definitely avoids that glitzy, Hedgwig-impersonating trap. They take a high-fashion approach, where gender is more like an accessory. Fashion photogs out there, take note.

The provocative shots, featured in February’s issue of Interview magazine, are simply gorgeously composed. This is bold fashion done well. Bold outfits, styled by Karl Templer – courtesy of Fashion Gone Rogue.

McDean’s trying to be different without substance. Bad lighting, cross lighting (i.e., copy stand) and masculine poses without a purpose. If Terry Richardson can do it, why can’t Craig? Effort + Execution = What’s the grade, a B- or C+? Chase preaches using a “Try to be different” approach. Is this example achieving that? I wonder.

Viewing a woman posed as in Foto # 1 makes me want to throw UP. Tasteless and trashy…At least cross those scrawny legs.

I honestly don’t know. Maybe her willingness to be ugly and edgy or something. I really have no idea. She did the “porno art” film and ever since then I’ve been seeing her. These photos are a interesting…ish….nothing really special. Honestly I thought they would have real teeth. This feels like an attempt to be scandalous, but it falls short. Kids these days smoke crack, rape, murder, steal, sext, it’s crazy world. You wanna be edgy your gonna have to work harder than this. Also hate the lighting in a few of these. If I see one more photo that feels like on camera speedlite im gonna lose my mind.

I’d like to take a detour on this subject to know how in the world Chloe got to be such a fashion celebrity if you will. She was in a couple of movies, (Kids, Last Days of Disco, American Psycho) but then she started showing up around the fashion world as some sort of icon. She’s no model, and I’m just not seeing or understanding where we’re all supposed to be in “awe” of her.

Someone please give me some insight into what I’m missing here with Chloe. Fun concept with the photos, and good photography on this.
