WIN a FREE Trip To ASMP Strictly Business 2 - Chicago
I think the business part of professional photography is darn important. That's why I've decided to sponsor one person from this community to attend the ASMP Strictly Business 2 seminar in Chicago April 11-13 for FREE. What's that? You don't live in Chicago? No problem - got you covered. I'll even fly you there, round trip airfare from anywhere in the lower 48 States, and I'll put you up in the designated conference hotel for 3 nights. The whole enchilada. Here's how you win:
1. Put your name, url, and up to 100 words about why you'd be a great candidate in the comments section below.Depending on the level of interest, I think this comment section could prove to be an interesting read. It could favor those with conviction. It could allow people to read and learn about you and other photographers they might not otherwise know. It also not-so-subtly encourages your networking skills, perhaps gets more unlikely people (your instructor, your friends, your mentor, your mom?) involved in THIS blog's community, and it ultimately helps educate an aspiring photographer at the best photo biz seminar on the market. Heck, it may even help educate the rest of us, since I hope that whomever I send to Chicago might enjoy writing up a brief paragraph or two on the seminar that we could share here in the future.
2. Reach out to friends, family, co-workers, instructors, etc, whomever makes sense to support your nomination. In the comments section below, have them list also your name, your website if you have one, and have them write from 0 to 100 words - not more - on your behalf, why you'd be a good candidate, etc.
3. That means nominations will look like this:
I nominate (photographer name)
www.(photographer url).com
From 0 to 100 words about (photographer name) and why he/she would be great for this scholarship blah blah blah.
4. You and/or these people who you ask to nominate you must have either Google/Blogger account OR be registered with Wordpress, Live Journal, Typepad, or AIM so as to use Open ID option in comments. ANONYMOUS nominations will be deleted.
5. I'll track numbers and read/review all nominations. Consideration will be made for quantity and quality of recommendations, quality of photos, etc.
6. Winner selection may be somewhat subjective, but hey, that's how the photography world works. This will help you get used to it. I may choose the winner directly, or pick some finalists and inquire further, or put this to a vote. TBD.
7. Lastly, remember you can and should nominate yourself immediately if you're interested in attending (good starting place!), but please do so only only once. Any other nominations you recruit must legitimately come from other people (not your imaginary friend). Any rigging or monkey business will be severely frowned upon.
Let's see how it goes...
--
[BTW, international readers, please apply! This is not intended to discriminate against you, but I couldn't predict what it could mean to absorb your ticket from, say, Sydney or Hong Kong. Thus, if you enter and win, you'll need to get yourself to the continental USA, and I'll get you to Chicago from your point of entry.]
UPDATE: Thanks so much to the many hundreds of entries. The winners have been announced at this new post.

I nominate - me, Julian Love
www.adventurephotographer.net
Why? OK, so I know a bit about business already. I'm a UK-based travel & lifestyle photographer who turned pro 2 years ago. I had a huge boost by winning a major award, Travel Photographer of the Year, in my first year in business and I now have a some regular editorial clients. BUT, my ambition is much higher - I want to do commercial and advertising work for outdoor and adventure sports companies. I'm shooting a new portfolio but it's my marketing and negotiation skills that need to take a big leap forward...and looking at the curriculum for Strictly Business 2, that is where I need to be!
Cheers, Julian
great to see someone giving back to the community in such a selfless way. good job!

Chase,
How is this different from Keyword Stuffing? This seems like a scheme to get lots of links from your blog by having people write positive things relating to photography. The net effect of your little contest is that you blog will come up much higher google than it did before. You should be ashamed of yourself... although I guess it is expected.

Wow - and I thought I was cynical!
I think this is a way cool idea and it will be interesting to see how this plays out. You have always been very supportive of other photographers and up-and-comers and I think this is a really neat way to continue that.
Duane...
If my comments help Chase in some way, good! I've received valuable advice and insperation from Chase. Considering the time and effort he puts into this blog, he should receive some benefit from it. Chase has consistently demonstrated his desire to give back and help other up and coming photogs. That should not go unrecognized or unrewarded. And what happens if Chase's blog gets higher rankings in Google? More people find it, and more people receive the benefit of Chase's wisdom and experience. Sounds like a win-win. So thanks Chase, I appreciate what you are doing for me and others.
After that I'm a little embarrased to nominate myself, because I didn't say all that just to suck up. I sincerely mean it, but I'm sure some will think I'm just trying to increase my chances of winning.
Anyway, I nominate me - Kurt Sowers
www.kurtsowers.com
In the last year I've started a photography business. I have a full time job in the IT field, and I have three teenagers and a wife who keep me plenty busy, so the photography biz has been going slow, but I'm getting there. And attending this seminar would be a great help. Good luck to all!
Kurt
I nominate -me Brett Turner
www.brettturnerphotography.com
Going to ASMP would make a huge difference in my ability to run my business effectively. At the moment it can’t happen with out help. After moving to Athens I have had to restart the business from scratch so there is no abundance of capital. But more I have found myself in the position of trying to help an amateur photographer I met here go pro. Some of his questions I didn’t have answers for; which is good because I have learned a great deal finding answers for him. For me to go to ASMP would benefit both of us.
Thanks
Brett
Chase, you kick ass. Im already headed to the SB2 in Philly this weekend. I dont even have a portfolio together yet but Im going cause you and Ed McCulloch and so many other people said to get the business side nailed down before you dive into this thing full time, so I am. Either way, you kick ass. Thanks. Look forward to buying you a beer someday.
@Photostar. Wow! Never got that one before - thanks for the tip. Funny thing is you're assuming I'm smart or calculated enough to (ahem) "keyword stuff". That said, feel free to share your email address and url. Those of us who are in this community to share knowledge and geek out about art and photography could probably learn a few things about how to scheme Google from you.
Now back to your regularly scheduled programming....
I nominate me--Troy Freund. http://troyfreund.com
For 4 years, I've organized a small photo-network called the Freetimers, to help other newbies not make newbie mistakes. I've organized group shoots, a portfolio review with local creatives, a photo-biz workshop, meetings with accountants and photo-reps, and group photo-exhibitions. I've done this because I want my photo-community to succeed and to assist them in connecting with other supportive creatives.
I wanted to attend this workshop, but with buying a house and getting married this year, just couldn't spare the funds.
Thanks for considering and being so generous,
Troy
Hi Chase,
I'd like to most humbly nominate myself:
www.erinwigger.com
Erin Wigger, NYC
I'm a recent convert to freelancing after spending several years in the dying newspaper market. Pictures and stories I know, but marketing and business practices are the areas I could use some work. I think I'm on the cusp of starting to get better work for better clients, but I want to have my business in place to handle that. I know that SB2 will get me to that place.
Thanks,
Erin
PS Thanks for this opportunity, I love being part of this community.
Name: Kevin Cloutier
URL: www.theartwebreathe.net
Words: Although possessing a creative eye for art is where we all begin, it is evident that learning good business skills is essential for any photographer who wants to succeed in today's market. What better way to learn these skills then from those who have excelled in our industry?
I have learned so much from this community, and I joined ASMP several months ago to take advantage of all of the resources they offer, but I still have so much to learn.
I am confident that attending this conference is just what I need to take my business to the next level.
I nominate Troy Freund. http://troyfreund.com
I am a friend and a member of the Free-timers group that Troy organized. I appreciate all that he has done for the group and how he keeps us up to date and networked with other photographers. I feel that this workshop will not only benfit Troy, but also the rest of the group.
Jennifer
I think photostar might have things reversed. Most people posting in comments on blogs include URLs. You see all of the blue names?
Google's PageRank historically rates popularity on incoming links, not outgoing. Chase has not, unless I misread, asked people to link to his site to enter the contest.
Unlike most photo contests, he's not even asking for your copyright and firstborn child (with option on 2nd and 3rd if you win). He's offering, at his own expense, a trip to a great conference for just the cost of a couple of short essays.
I'm as paranoid as the rest, but Chase is historically on the level and gives back with no strings attached.
i nominate Troy Freund
www.troyfreund.com
For all the times Troy Freund has donated his talents, time, and equipment, i think he deserves this. Troy is one of those rare breed photogs who cares more about the art than himself. We even did a day long photo shoot together for the WI adoption agency. Times like these are many for Troy Freund. Honestly I feel he deserves it for being a swell fellow, a dang god photag, and for all the times he has donated. He could use this to hone his biz skills and still continue doing donation work, i know he would.
thanks for your consideration
Derek Freund
I nominate Troy Freund.
www.troyfreund.com
His work is beautiful. I've had the good fortune to be a portrait subject of his, and his professionalism and attention to detail are unmatched in my experience with photographers. Troy would be an asset to your workshop.
I nominate Troy Freund.
www.troyfreund.com
If Troy attends this conference, he will come home with great enthusiasm that he will undoubtedly share with his large network in the Greater Milwaukee Area.
He is a fabulous touchpoint to photography in this region. He operates a number of email lists where he spends countless hours sharing tips and keeping people's pulses pounding around photography--for students, amateurs, pros, designers and anyone else he gets to know. Not only would you be investing in Troy, you would be investing in the greater region--as well as your own blog. He's perfect for this opportunity. Thanks for your generosity.
Chase,
I nominate myself - Dominic Eidson, www.dominiceidson.com.
Why? Because I love photography. More than I love my current bread & butter IT job. And in order to make (more of) a business out of photography, I'll have to learn more about photography as a business. And what better place to learn the business side of photography than to be invited to SB2 by none other than Chase Jarvis himself?
I'm currently focusing on portraiture, hoping to be able to combine my love for photojournalism into one of those "unique looks." However, I also like shooting landscapes, travel photography and the weird stuff that goes into "contemporary."
I forgot my aim ID: prtzlbutt
I can also be found on LinkedIn.
I nominate my friend...
Lane Hartwell
http://fetching.net/
She's an extremely talented photographer, but would benefit a great deal from a business of photography intervention. She's taken some hard stands against copyright infringement online and continues to struggle more than I'd expect for someone of her skill level. I think her works stands for itself.
Jim
Ben Delaney
http://bendelaneyphoto.com
I would like to be considered for this prize for the following reasons: I'm a young, passionate photographer who desperately needs (and wants) to be equipped with greater knowledge of how to be successful in the business of this wonderful field. I've been circling around it for years and have never fully taken the leap into full-time commercial photography. I freelance and "moonlight" as often as possible, but have yet to make the jump. I want nothing more. I believe this conference will be both motivating and enlightening towards that end. Thanks for the consideration.
Kudos Chase! It's great of you to continue the giving. Being one in attendance at SB2 in Atlanta, I have to say it is a great experience.
Another nomination for Julian Love
www.adventurephotographer.net
When Jules “turned pro” a couple of years ago I admired his guts, but viewed his decision sceptically.
Now he's won awards and is jetting off on assignments I'm furiously envious! If he builds up some more prestigious (read “higher paying”) gigs then my scepticism will prove unfounded. Not only are his pictures great, but he works damn hard at it: he really deserves to succeed.
He’s also a gifted teacher, with a near photographic memory, so I know that he’d absorb all he’s taught and be sure to pass it on to other, less progressed, wannabe photographers!
I nominate myself, Anna Ironside.
http://www.ironsideimaging.com/recent/
I'm a young(ish) photographer on extended maternity leave, raising my young son and trying to maintain my business contacts. I am also trying (like many) to make the leap from assistant to full-time freelance photographer, and I would like to hone my business chops.
If I don't win, I'd like to nominate Troy Freund, too. (troyfreund.com) He's a swell guy.
I would like to nominate Kevin Cloutier (www.theartwebreathe.net).
Kevin is a highly talented young man who began developing his photography skills in high school; since then, he is rarely seen without a camera in hand. Prior to ever taking a photography class, Kevin had already developed a clientele—including a client who flew him from Florida to NYC to shoot pre-engagement photos. Since that time, Kevin has been studying graphic design and has continued to develop his photography business, consistently providing high quality work to those with whom he works. I think that Kevin should receive this scholarship because he is highly motivated and is passionate about photography.
I want to nominate Ben Delaney
http://bendelaneyphoto.com/
Vote for Ben!
I also nominate Ben Delaney
http://bendelaneyphoto.com/.
ben's work is superb and I don't know anyone else who would get more value out of attending this conference.
I nominate Ben Delaney, http://bendelaneyphoto.com
Because Ben Rocks!
I nominate Ben Delaney
http://bendelaneyphoto.com
Ben is an amazing photographer!
I nominate myself, Brendan Quinn
www.flickr.com/brendan_quinn
As a student about to enter the photography business world there are many unanswered questions and areas of confusion. The hardest one to answer is the simple question of where do I start? I feel this convention would do more then just give me the knowledge to start on the path to my dream, It would also help me to realize that with the determination and and careful planning, that dream is attainable.
Thank you for your time,
Brendan Quinn
I nominate myself:
Oscar Lopez
http://www.element-1.com
Im a self taught, semi professional photographer that would love to have the opportunity to not just dream, eat and live photography, but also to experience an event of such magnitude to help me master the business side of this amazing life that I have chose.
Im a student of the Souther Alberta Institute of Technology, where I am currently taking New Media Production and Design. My goal is to be able to mix photography and multimedia. School is something else that does not allow me to concentrate as much as I wish into the business part of photography. This would pretty much mean the world to me.
Thanks for the opportunity!
Oscar Lopez
I nominate myself, Lincoln Barbour http://www.lincolnbarbour.com
I've been an ASMP member since 2002. I'm at the point in my career where I've almost made it. Not quite getting the big jobs, but getting regular work. Many other new photogs now seek out my advice on getting started and everything I tell them I learned from ASMP. Going to SB2 in Chicago would not only benefit me, but would benfit others by allowing me to pass on greater knowledge through my connections, my blog, and my leadership in ASMP.
I nominate Dominic Eidson. http://www.dominiceidson.com
I've watched Dominic grow from taking mere point-and-shoot pics to professional quality photos in a very short time. He has a natural talent for composing interesting and unique images and has dedicated a great deal of his free time to studying and practicing a variety of photography techniques. His natural curiosity about cause and effect allows for easy and creative experimentation. He will very likely develop a fresh, singular style that will prove popular. Investing in Dominic will undoubtedly be a profitable venture.
I nominate myself, Bill Pennington
http://www.stockphotojourney.com
I am attempting to reenter the photography business after a 15 year hiatus in tech land. Please help me rediscover the creativity that I have lost in the bits and bites of the tech world.
I would like to nominate Nick Davis
http://cycle61.blogspot.com/
Nick is currently in the middle of a career transition to a professional photographer. Nick is opening up this journey for the world to see. Not only would Nick benefit greatly from attending ASMP, every other photographer attempting to make the transition would benefit from Nick's sharing of the process. If I don't get chosen, having Nick attend would be the next best thing since I know he will be happy to share the knowledge he would gain by attending.
I nominate Kevin Cloutier, www.theartwebreathe.net.
Kevin's hard work, integrity, and attention to detail have made him a successful photographer with a growing client base. He's constantly improving his craft, not only by pursuing a degree in graphic design, but also by teaching himself different aspects of the business. If he's not out of town shooting a wedding, he's getting shots for local clients, finding an interesting location or object to photograph, or learning about different tools and equipment (while also taking a full load of classes). I highly recommend Kevin for this scholarship because of his dedication and desire to further his skills.
I nominate Brett Turner (www.brettturnerphotography.com)
Brett is a gifted photographer who is rebuilding his business after leaving VA for my job. He has a great deal to offer the photographic community, as he is already being sought out as a mentor by younger photographers. This conference would give him the boost in business knowledge that he needs to take off.
I nominate Ben Delaney, http://bendelaneyphoto.com.
Besides being one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, Ben is a hard-working creative professional. An opportunity like this definitely wouldn't be wasted on a photographer of his caliber.
I nominate - Dominic Eidson, www.dominiceidson.com.
Dominic needs something to do. I'm sure he would be a good photographer on his own, but it always helps to get a little instruction from the experts. Please pick him.
Thank you for this opportunity!
Be well,
Heather

100 words:
Photography is my #1 passion. Lately I’ve found success photographing the local Seattle comedy scene, shooting portraits and live performances, which has led to photos being published in local papers and magazines. I’d like to build on this momentum by starting a full time photography business. But without a degree in business, or in photography, I feel overwhelmed and lost. I’d like to avoid making stupid mistakes. This workshop would be a fantastic opportunity to answer my questions. And I would gladly share my experience with your readers. It’s not crazy to make a living doing what you love, right?
I nominate myself- Keith Emmerich
http://keithemmerichphotography.blogspot.com/
I am currently a student at CDIABU and graduate in May and I am planning to move to Chicago after graduation to pursue my dreams. I have been shooting for four years creating Fine Art work and PJ work. I have done many things in my life and this is the only “thing” that makes sense to me.
I just finished a business class at school and started working on my business and marketing plans and this would have huge benefits for me to come to Chicago and learn more business and be able to network in my future city.

I nominate me, Austin Joffe
As a full-time photography student at RCC. I have taken a HUGE financial sacrifise. I struggle everyday to come up with enough money just to GET to school. With the on going payments to B&H for film, and other photographic equipment. That said, I am willing to do what it takes to get the most education in the photographic industry as possible. I understand the importance of business; Unfortunately, The school's program does not require a Photography course in Business. I feel that attending this seminar would greatly enhance and prepare myself for the future.
Best of Luck to all!
Austin Joffe
I nominate Dalyce E. Burgess
http://www.photodalyce.com
As a freelance photographer with a day job I have to say the Chase Jarvis blog and podcasts have been a great inspiration for me as I jump start my photography career. For the next few months I will be in the Chicago area with an intent to prepare and focus on my business. ASMP's Strictly Business course will be a wonderful addition to my journey, as well as a much needed learning experience. As soon as I saw the blog of the 5 best deals in town I knew I would take the Strictly Business course.... even better if it's free! Thank you for giving fellow photographers all over the world such an opportunity.
Dalyce
I nominate David Hobby...er wait, nevermind. I think he's doing quite fine on his own! :)
Star-
It doesn't actually work like that. Since all of the nominations will be here in the comment section, the only possible beneficiary to the juice might be the commenters themselves (with their linked URLs.)
Alas, no, as Blogger uses "nofollow" tags in the comment links automatically. So no Google Juice that way, either.
Some poeple will likely write about this. I did at Strobist. But giving away four-digit Golden Tickets in the hope that someone will write about it and link to you is not a very good value proposition, IMO.
This is exactly what it seems to be: A discussion generator to raise general awareness about the business of photography. And that is a good thing.
David Hobby
I nominate Ben Delaney
http://bendelaneyphoto.com
Ben is a fantastic photographer. He has done several photo shoots for different businesses that I have been a part of. The end result has always been amazing. You will not be disappointed with your choice.
I nominate- Me, Josh Evilsizor
www.evolvedphotography.com
Why?Because it would help me start my new business. Photography, outside of my family, is my life. Each and every morning, I wake up, fight traffic, then sit at a desk all day and wish I was outside doing what I love... Taking pictures! This would be the first step in burning down my cubicle(not literally)and embarking on a career I am passionate about.
I nominate Kevin Cloutier a.k.a. TheArtWeBreathe.Net
Kevin is a talented photographer whose amazing frame-taking ability is only overshadowed by his great personality. He has a unique style and, coupled with the skills presented at this conference, would be a huge asset to his clients. I know he already is, so I would love to see him grow from a convention like this.

Inception Design
I nominate Heather Christianson.
Ive been in the photo industry for awhile now, and I know a bazillion photographers. I wasn't going to comment on this post for that very reason, but after seeing Heather's comment, It made me think about how much I actually see her taking photos. That girl is everywhere. Every show. Every event. Every week. She works her ass off and I have been watching her do this for about three years now. This chick takes dedication to a new level. Go Heather!
I nominate my son, Henrik Høy Karlsen
www.karlsenfoto.dk
Being an
unsuccessful semi-professional photographer
with high - and increasing - expenses to the local bars he really
needs some help to get a better
financial situation. Three days far away from the high danish alcohol
taxes would be a huge help!
Thanks

I nominate Chad Ryan (me).
ChadRyan.blogspot.com
I'm a sports photographer and writer for a daily newspaper. Because the newspaper industry forgot how to make money, I figure I’d better learn. Making the transition to self-employment will be vital if I hope to stay involved in the business of photography.
Journalism schools don't teach the business of photography. I've read books. I’ve taught myself what I could. But, at this point live interaction would be most beneficial for me.
I’m driven to succeed. I just need the road map to get there.
Besides, I can save you the airfare – I’m a short drive away from Chicago.
Respectfully,
Chad Ryan
**Thank you for offering such a great opportunity
I nominate Heather Christianson
www.heatherchristianson.com. Heather has tirelessly documented the last two years of the booming Seattle alternative comedy scene. She is a fundamental part of the community and her photos make the scene feel even more cohesive. Her photos are a thread that weave the history of the last two amazing years together. Additionally, she has allowed us to use her photos to promote our work on fliers and on the internet. We are also fortunate that Heather's photos have been used by local papers to bring more attention to our work. She is definitely deserving of this honor.
I nominate me, Ake van der Velden (www.akevandervelden.be) because my passion about photography is giving me major headaches recently.
My photography education didn't prepare me for the harsh world of getting commissioned work, making myself a living with the images I crave to create. The beautiful thing about photography is the ability to keep learning, keep trying every single moment, to become a better photographer. One day...! ;-)
May the best one win this Free Trip to Strictly Business 2! Ake
I nominate Troy Freund
www.troyfreund.com
I believe holds a very special talent and love for photography. As being someone who is closely linked to him, I personally see the care he takes in forming his images and how he captures moments that are unfolding without interrupting them. Simply BEAUTIFUL!
GOod luck troy
I nominate Lincoln Barbour
http://www.linconlbarbour.com
Lincoln has been a great help to the Board of ASMP Oregon. He is also an up and coming photographer (read competitor) in the Portland/PCNW marketplace. Therefore, it is entirely in my own self interest that I am nominating Lincoln. By schooling him in excellent business practices I ensure that we have a great person waiting in the wings for ASMP Oregon's Board, and that he will be an ethical and businesslike photographer, and a worthy competitor.
-sincerely
andyBATT

PS Chase - you rock. This is an awesome idea.
I nominate myself, Ben Zvan
http://photography.zvan.net/
I have been a serious photographer for many years and have managed to cover most of my expenses by selling my art and doing some freelance work. I have a basic knowledge of the business of photography from articles and books I have read, but have not been able to progress beyond the self-sustaining point. I feel this would give me greater benefit from the seminar because I have a higher starting point than the average guy with a camera.
Thanks,
Ben
I nominate Lincoln Barbour.
www.lincolnbarbour.com
Lincoln worked as studio manager for me for several years. He is extremely talented, and on a fast track to getting some real recognition and a great client list. I've been reading the reviews of SB2, and my belief is that this seminar will be for him like getting shot out of a cannon. Add this to the fact that he is a most generous and kind person. The photo community will get it back in spades, I guarantee!
Philip Beaurline

I nominate me, Martha Retallick
http://www.westernskycommunications.com/blog
I've been in business as a designer for many years. I stumbled around for years before I figured out how to run a design studio.
Not wishing to repeat this experience as a photographer, I want to get started on the right foot. A trip to this conference will be a big help.
I nominate Heather Christianson
www.heatherchristianson.com
Heather Christianson has exhibited amazing discipline in capturing the best of the indy-comedy scene here in Seattle. She’s always present at shows snapping away in the background and one would be hard pressed to find a comic in this city who hasn’t bugged her for her work. She has done the majority of the photos on my webpage, davidcope.net, and I’m grateful for her talents. She has a passion for her work and hands down would be the go to person for this sponsorship.
David Cope

I nominate myself, Heather Mladek
www.home.maine.rr.com/mladek
After attending Photoshelter's Town Hall meeting in NYC, I, cautiously, left my steady school photography paycheck to pursue a career in freelance photography. I was tired of trying to fit my creativity into a head box. I spent the intervening months devouring all the photography business resources I could. I have learned many things so far, but would benefit from an intensive weekend of photography business courses. I am truly just starting out, but I am driven to succeed. I have found a treasure trove of inspiration and information here in your blog, Chase. Thank you. -Heather
Nominate Ben Delaney w/ http://bendelaneyphoto.com
This would be a great opportunity for Ben. Always nice to refresh with groups like this to keep the momentum and inspiration flowing.
Yahoo Ben!!! Keeping my fingers crossed for you.
mindy
I nominate Jason Huang
www.table4photography.com/blog/
In my subjective (therefore perfect opinion), Jason is the unrivaled nominee. Why believe my opinion? Aside from self-proclaimed perfection, I offer practical reasons.
First, Jason Huang knows networking. If you pick Jason -so will you. Jason’s an Asian American. Understandably, there’s no affirmative action. However, I contend: by knowing Jason you therefore practically know all Asians. The Asian network is exclusive, yet a notably wealthy and extensive demographic.
Finally, Jason’s an emerging talent in the photography field. He has started his own company and has quickly grown in popularity. He has the passion to be and learn from the best.
I nominate myself Brian Faini
www.brianfaini.com
I will keep it short and be as modest as possible. I am awesome.
If selected I will stop bothering you with comments on everything (sounds great doesn't). Also, I am attempting to start a co-op studio that will expand to a gallery space and center for photographic education. For this I need to expand my business knowledge in order to be more successful and better my ability to deal with clients.
I nominate Heather Christianson
www.heatherchristianson.com
Heather has tirelessly photographed the Seattle comedy scene, and has aided in its growth by providing photos that show the depth and beauty of the art. Her photos have appeared in numerous publications, and have helped raise the profile of Seattle comedy. She works tirelessly, and is an amazing talent. We are lucky to have her.
I enthusiastically nominate Troy Freund (troyfreund.com) for the ASMP workshop. He's a fantastic person and a wonderful photographer. His curiosity about people and the world around him really shine through in his photography. He'd really appreciate the opportunity to attend.
I nominate Heather Christianson
ttp://www.flickr.com/photos/beitilyng/
Heather has quickly become THE talent
photographer in the Northwest! From
live music to the huge Seattle Comedy scene, she has volunteered countless hours filming some of Seattles hardest working entertainers. Helping comics and musicians build their portfolios with low cost sessions because she has a passion for the arts, Heather
has had her work featured in the "Seattle Times" the "Post-Intelligencer" and Horizon Air's in-flight magazine. This would be an awesome experience for
her, and the benefits are too many to name. Heather is a artists best
friend!
I nominate Jeffrey Cicolani
photos.cicolani.net
Like so many of those in this community, I am a self taught and learning photographer. Theory in composition, lighting, and processing I have been learning as I go. The Strobist community has been an incredible help teaching me what I need to know to make my photos better. Now, I am pushing hard to start my photography business here, in Austin. This seminar will greatly help me start right.
I nominate Eric Schmiedl, ericschmiedl.com.
Eric is the Director of Enterprise for the Technique, MIT's school yearbook, as well as the photography club. It's his job to help the rest of the staffers learn how to publish, sell and license our photos and also to deal with MIT administration regarding paying staffers for photographs we take. He will also have to train next year's Director of Enterprise to fill in his footsteps. This opportunity is perfect for him to learn the skills he may not already have in order to do this job to his best ability.
I nominate, me. Brian Dreisbach
www.getyourmacon.com
I'm a relatively new to the photography field, and have been assisting in LA for a few years. There are so many things to learn while being on set and proper business skills are not one of them. As I’m on my way to being behind the lens (and not just the computer) I’ve come to realize one of the less sexy yet most important skills is how to sustain profitably in business that is also a passion. I’d relish the opportunity to be able to further my knowledge and will of course provide you with copious notes!
I nominate myself, Eric Schmiedl. http://www.ericschmiedl.com
I want to be an advertising photographer. But I’m also fortunate enough to work with 80+ incredibly creative people as photo-ed and director of enterprise at MIT's photography club / yearbook. When a photographer has the world media asking to license a unique spot-news picture, I’m the one giving them advice on usage and fees. When people want to open up our archive for stock sales, I make sure the deal is fair. That’s why you should send me to SB2—I won’t just pass on the knowledge to other photographers, but the skills I learn will directly improve their business.

I totally would nominate myself. I am in desperate need of good sound business advice. My birthday is the 11th so it would be totally appropriate for me to be selected but I will not flaunt my birthday to be selected when I may not be able to attend. With all of that said, I want to thank you Chase for being such an inspiring supporter of fellow photographers and passing it on. That is what really makes the world a better place. So even though I would like to nominate myself I am not, I know you will select a very well deserving person and maybe next time an amazing offer like this comes up I will be able to go for it. Good luck Chase and keep doing amazing work. The birthday girl,
melissa
I nominate Lincoln Barbour http://www.lincolnbarbour.com
Lincoln has taught me everything I know about digital photography and being in business as a freelance photographer. I can honestly say that my own photography business would not be what it is today without his guidance and support. As his studio mate, I can say that, on a daily basis, I hear him on his phone providing counsel and support to other photographers in the industry. I agree with Philip Beaurline that the photography community, as a whole, will benefit if Lincoln is awarded this scholarship.
Sincerely,
Lauren Brooks

I would like to nominate my self of course.
Brian Larter
http://brianlarter.com
I am a freelance photographer in the city of Halifax, Nova Scotia. A little over a year ago, I realized that the city of Halifax did not have a rental studio for photographers in the area to use. I took it upon myself to start a photo rental studio so every photographer in the city of halifax would have access to a studio and be able to experiment with every sort of light they could possibly imagine; wealth was no longer an issue. After working with various government agencies we were turned down for government funding because the people in charge didn't feel there was a market for such a business in the city of Halifax. Knowing there was a need for such a space, I took out a small business loan from the local credit union under my own name and opened Aperture Studios (http://aperturestudios.ca). The original plan was to open the space as a cooperative with the local photo community, but I was informed by several that that had been attempted in the past and it failed due to a lack of leadership. I was informed that I should open it as a business and just ask for guidance from the community.
The business so far has been an extreme success, or so I think. I have had little guidance or help in the business aspect of Aperture Studios and am really looking for an opportunity to learn as much as I can about the photography business and business in general.
The business so far has been a great success, and the number of loyal customers keeps growing. There is still much for me to learn about the business aspect of Aperture Studios, however, as I have had little guidance in that respect. Losing the opportunity for an interest-free government loan also meant an end to the advice they provide for new small business owners. Other help for small businesses is notoriously hard to come by in Nova Scotia. I want to learn as much as I can about the photography business and business in general, so as to improve the services Aperture Studios can provide the Halifax photography community.
While running this studio, I still manage to run my own personal photo business, attend school for photography, and run several small organizations in the city of Halifax, including the halifax photo society. If I am able to attend this conference, I will return to Halifax to share the knowledge I acquire with the local community.
Sorry this is a little long, but thank you for the opportunity!

I nominate Heather Christianson
www.heatherchristianson.com
Heather has done more than just document Seattle's emerging comedy scene, she has directly contributed to its growth. Her photos have given us tools that most independent comics can't afford and don't have access to. She has done more for Seattle comedy with a camera than any single comedian has done with a microphone. We have a face because of her amazing photographs.

Booker T Brown
www.bookertbrown.com
I think Booker should be given this experience for many reasons. He is hard working, reliable, trusting, and giving. I have known Booker for 8 years or so; I seldom meet anyone with his artistic eye, or his giving nature. Booker has recently devoted himself full-time to the photography industry, and there is no doubt in my mind that he will succeed in this endeavor. Booker is always helping others (volunteering for weddings or youth leagues), and I know that he (although he probably wouldn't vocalize it) would cherish the help of someone else.
Vote 4 Booker,
Josh
I nominate Troy Freund because he is really the kind of artist that is using his skills to make his community a better place. He is an excellent photographer and his passion for helping, inspiring and informing people, is well... inspirational! He would really benefit from this opportunity and so would all the other people he works with.
Peace, Kari
I nominate Brian Faini
www.brianfaini.com
Like he said before, he is kind of awesome.
His stuck in the wilderness known as small-town newspapers and person of his talents should be allowed to use their creativity, hence
his attempt and starting a co-op studio that will expand to a gallery space and center for photographic education.
When you think of awesome, think of Faini.
I nominate Brian Larter
www.brianlarter.com
I've worked with Brian as a model for over two years now, and he's enormously talented and committed to the photography community, as well as being so much fun to work with. He's taken an incredible range of pictures of me - from costumed to natural portraits, from body painted to pregnant. And they've all been awesome. He's professional and approachable at the same time, and has come a long way as a business person in the time I've known him. I can't imagine anyone who deserves this award more.
I nominate myself, Simon Bartell
www.simonbartell.com
I'm a good photographer, constantly trying to learn new skills, but my skillset in the business end of photography is sadly lacking. I plan on attending SB2 regardless; the knowledge I can take away from it will be invaluable to me in making the transition to a full-time commercial shooter. But winning this would ease a big financial burden on me.
Hi my name is Tim Mars and Heather Christianson took some great pics of me while I was performing stand-up in Seattle. She was very professional and curtious to deal with as far as obtaining the photos as well. I hope this helps! I nominate Heather Christianson!!
