Chase Jarvis FRAMES: Studio Buildout

I wanted to share a short video today that's a little more private than my normal ones. It's certainly behind-the-scenes, but it's not meant to reveal anything special about photography. In a way, it's just a fun little 4000-picture journey--done in the Chase Jarvis: FRAMES style--documenting some of our time during the last few months of 2007. HUGE thanks to everyone who played a role in pulling this project together - you know who you are!

That is one awesome studio. But, I have come to the conclusion that you are a fake. Because, "if it seems too good to be true, it probably is". And, there's no way that you could have an address of 3333. The number 3 is very special in aesthetics, and you somehow managed to get it 4 times! I no longer believe any of this CJinc madness. Your photography is incredible, but thats a relatively established truth. What should be in the news as much as your photos is the seemingly boundless energy and vision you exude. Chase Jarvis said...: @ Eric: same studio as the packing vid and the Flickr meetup vid shows briefly. It all came together at end of 2007, although it feels like details still buttoning up almost daily. Just now getting around to assembling the documentation of our lengthy buildout process - kind of fun to reflect...wanted to have something cool to send to friends and family, as well as our kickass architects: SKB Architects. Shout outs to Amy, Kate, and Kyle. As well as interior help from Doug and Sarah at ObjektsLLC.

BTW, I *wish* we could have built it all in the sun. Camera was indeed absent on those days where I had to sweep water out as it leaked under the door during construction (amongst the myriad of other construction challenges that don't get to appear in still images ;); 11:13 PM

Especially interesting to me, as I work as in the data communications industry installing small to large cabling systems for buildings, we get in there before the plaster is put on the walls, and end up staying there right till the week or two before the customer moves in, so from a profesional point of view it was interesting to see how the fit-out (We tend to call them fitouts in South Australia) of your studio came along. Watching the construction in fast-forward, and importantly, the customers moving in and furnishing the place to their desire made me smile. It's not too often that you see such customer interaction on a construction project such as a building fitout.

And from a photographic point of view, I'm inspired by the video collage of photos right from day one of the buildout. Especially where you freeze on a particular frame and pan across it.

I dunno, call me a geek but it makes me giddy inside seeing such smooth videos of a project like this.

what is the square footage? By the video, it looks damn big.. if that's the case (and it may not be), why is such a big space needed if most of your work is on location? this question was brought up by a friend I shared the video with. I'm not Chase, so I didn't have a answer for him..
My guess would be besides office space, you have a shooting dock for any in-studio/green screen shoots that occur?

@ anon (dov): the big main space about 2500 sqft. We indeed do a lot of location but some studio in the vein of what you're saying with greenscreen,etc and also shoot some just plain studio stuff as well and have a lot of fun! Space is key.

@ simon: the main shooting space is where you see the conference table - that alone is about 35'x35'x18', although we can shoot all over...; 9:55 AM

@ Mike: I don't roll "traditional". We have no cyclorama - we just use the big space in the front and hang seemlesses as necessary. It's a very versatile room.; 5:56 PM

For pro photo work, I use the Hasselblad Digital platform and the Nikon D3 platform.; 9:54 AM

-yes, we cut these FRAMES videos together with FCP after importing all the thousands of jpgs at hi def resolution (at least 1080 pixels on the short dimension), we can string the shots out on a timeline and coordinate them with music, employ burns effects, etc.
-yes, we're digging the new Aperture. See my announcement of the release and assessment of new features in this earlier post on Aperture 2
